    Do you enjoy watching film and considering the deeper meaning behind its art form? Would you be excited about learning the craft of screenwriting and producing your own? Have you considered the impact global film has on the world? If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then A Level Film Studies is the subject for you! One of the main cultural innovations of the 20th century and a major art form of the last hundred-year is the development of film. Those who study it typically brings with them a high degree of excitement and enthusiasm for the subject, considered an important contribution to the curriculum. You will have the opportunity to investigate how film works as both an aesthetic medium and as a medium of representation. You will be introduced to a wide range of films and broaden your knowledge of the world in the process. Film Studies is taught from the Eduqas exam board with exams sat at the end of the second year. A grade 5 in GCSE English Language Course Content A wide range of films will be studied from across the globe, focussing on specialist study areas for each unit. You will study seven units over the two years and also complete a Non-Examined Assessment (coursework). 1. ‘Hollywood 1930-1990': This unit introduces two films, one from the classical Hollywood period (1930-1960) and the other from the New Hollywood period (1961-1990). Within this unit your focus will be on understanding the impact the ‘Auteur’ has on the film making process, and the aesthetics and style of the film. You will study Vertigo and Alien. 2. ‘British Film since 1995’: In this unit you will look at two British films which will focus your attention on ideology and representations. The two films you will analyse in depth are Trainspotting and Shaun of the Dead. 3. ‘American film since 2005’: This unit is a specialist study and draws on understanding theories of spectatorship and the impact the film has on the spectator, and vice versa with films such as La La Land and Beasts of the Southern Wild. 4. ‘Global film’: This unit takes you around the world, to pre-war Italy in Life is Beautiful and to Korean film with Parasite. It allows you to study the way film is constructed across the world, and the way specific groups of people are represented and what we, and others can learn from this. 5. ‘Documentary film’: Here you will explore the award-winning documentary Amy which explores the explosive life of Amy Winehouse and asks you to consider the construction of the documentary as an art form 6. ‘Experimental film’: This explores Tarantino in close detail with a study which examines what an ‘Auteur’ is, and the impact they have with Pulp Fiction being your anchor for this. 7. ‘Silent Cinema’: This unit which expects you to engage with critical debates about the art form by exploring a range of classic, silent films. 8. ‘Non-examined Assessment’: Lastly, in both years of study you will complete a NEA (coursework) which will see you combining all your knowledge and understanding of film to create a film product – either a screenplay or a short film. Progression Routes There are a variety of different progression routes you can follow with this subject. These can include different pathways to achieve numerous careers through Higher Education, Apprenticeships or Employment. Specific routes for Film Studies can include working in Film, Media or TV, Journalism, Writing, Teaching, Advertising, Marketing and Communications. Several of our students go on to study Film Studies or Film production at university. Additional Learning Opportunities Learners studying Film Studies are welcome to join our Media and Film Academy, where they focus on making a film and constructing a media campaign. They can also join our English or Creative Writing academy for further creative based activities. There are also regular talks organised for learners through our lunchtime talks series, and within specific academies from a diverse range of speakers. This may include academics from Film and Media departments at universities and people working in the world of Film. Business examines how and why businesses are set up and develop. It explores what challenges they face and how internal and external influences affect their decisions. The subject develops the skills needed for business or to enter higher education to study the subject. It is a solid foundation for many different business-related careers, and pathways. The qualification follows the AQA specification, you will sit the A Level exams at the end of your second year. You will sit three exams each worth a third of the total qualification. Course Content Year 1 In the first year you will study six units; 1. ‘What is a business?’: In this unit, you will explore the basics of business. Why do businesses exist? What are their aims and objectives and how do businesses measure profit? You will look at distinct types of business from sole traders to private and public limited companies, private and public sector organisations, and non-profit organisations. What are the roles of shareholders and what influences share prices? You will also look at what factors affect costs and demands such as competition and market conditions. 2. ‘Managers, leadership and decision making’: In this unit you will look at the role of a managers and how management and leadership style are utilised in the workplace. You will also explore what influences management decision and the role of stakeholders in that process. 3. ‘Decision making to improve marketing performance’: In this unit you will explore why businesses set marketing objectives and the influences on these from internal and external factors. You will look at the importance of primary and secondary marketing research and how companies interpret marketing data. You will also look at how marketing decisions are made and how target markets are decided on. 4. ‘Decision making to improve operational performance’: In this unit you will look at how businesses set operational objectives and how they analyse their operational performance and interpret data. You will also look at how businesses try to increase efficiency and productivity amongst their labour force and resources and how they seek to maintain quality, manage inventory, and supply chains. 5. ‘Decision making to improve financial performance’: In this unit you will see how businesses set financial objectives and explore the difference between cashflow and profit. You will examine how businesses forecast cash flow and profitability and see how companies make financial decisions and their rationale for different approaches. 6. ‘Decision making to improve human resource performance’: In the last unit for the first year, you will look at how businesses set targets for individual performance, what the influences are on these objectives and decisions and how businesses analyse their human resources performance. You will also explore the way in which different businesses follow different organisational structures. Year 2 In the second year there are four further units taught. These build upon the skills and knowledge learnt in the first year. 7. ‘Analysing the strategic position of a business’: This unit looks at the strategy and tactics businesses use. How they assess their financial position and how balance sheets, income statements and financial rations work. You will practically analyse data from financial statements to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a business and analyse what opportunities and threats are present in the political, economic, and legal environment for businesses. There will be discussion on the impact of demographical changes and the use of technology. 8. ‘Choosing strategic direction’: In this unit you will look at how businesses compete and develop strategies for new products and markets. You will examine the influences on these decisions and the value of different strategic positioning strategies. 9. ‘Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies’: This unit explores why businesses grow or retrench and how they manage this process. You will examine how and why businesses innovate and how international markets operate. Lastly you will analyse how businesses adopt and use digital technologies and evaluate the impact that these have. 10. ‘Managing strategic change’: In this last unit, you will look at the causes and pressures for change within business and how change is managed. You will also explore how, despite best intentions, strategy sometimes fails and evolves throughout the process of change. You will see how businesses strategically plan but also contingency plan to reduce the risks of change. Progression Routes Many learners go onto to study Business at university after completing an A Level in Business, but a growing number are pursuing degree apprenticeships with leading organisations. For those looking at careers in marketing a suggested combination of subjects is Business and Media Studies or Business and English Language. Business and Economics is also a classic combination for those looking at going into the finance industry. Careers in banking, accountancy, finance, production management or human resources are common destinations for those who choose Business. An alternative to university after studying Business is a business-related apprenticeship which we regularly advertise to our learners. Additional Learning Opportunities Learners studying Business are welcome to join our Business Academy. In this academy we put theory into practice by giving you the opportunity to start your own business. You will be given a cash injection to bring a product to market with expert advice from business advisors from the world of business. There are also regular talks organised through our lunchtime talks series. This has included, in the past, talks from business foundations and business owners eager to meet our learners to provide opportunities. There is an apprenticeship team on hand to explore alternatives to university through business apprenticeships who offer opportunities to engage with you, throughout your time at SGS Sixth. Do you want to develop your independent study skills to stand out at university? If the answers to any of these questions are ‘yes,’ then the EPQ is the fourth subject for you! The EPQ is recognised by many universities and employers and is worth half an A Level. Many universities make lower A Level offers to learners who have undertaken the EPQ. The subject is focused around the creation of a Production Log and Assessment Record that you complete over the course of the qualification. You will need to undertake a research project that is handed in to your supervisor and complete a presentation about your research to you present to an audience. Provide evidence of your project development and keep a production log before final submission to your supervisor. The skills you will develop on the EPQ include: Research skills - The ability to search for and identify suitable sources of information for your chosen topic area. Project skills - Being able to develop skills and techniques for the safe execution of your project including ethical considerations, research methodology and writing techniques. ICT skills - You will develop skills around the production and development of your project and its presentation. Project Management skills - Including time, resource and task management skills. Writing and referencing skills and the prevention of plagiarism. Presentation skills - Building the confidence to develop and present your findings to an audience. Progression Routes The EPQ can help prepare you for the independent study skills you need to be able to thrive at university. It works similar to how a dissertation is undertaken at university and helps prepare you with the study and research skills to thrive on a range of subjects from the Sciences to Humanities, Creative and Professional subjects. Additional Learning Opportunities The EPQ is an additional qualification offered to learners and as a fourth subject choice, those taking it will not need to choose a Sixth Form Academy. The EPQ develops a range of skills and attributes with those who take it including project and time management skills, research and writing skills and ICT and presentation skills. The course is taught at our nearby campus at WISE and allows learners access to our high-quality facilities. This includes a darkroom, print workshop and Mac suite led by expert tutors, whilst also being part of the Sixth Form. Progression Routes Once you complete the full two-year programme you will be ready to explore Higher Education opportunities or our Foundation Diploma. Universities offer a range of creative degrees and this subject is ideal for those looking at undertaking one in Photography, Art of Media especially when combined with other subjects. Additional Learning Opportunities Taking the UAL L3 Subsidiary Diploma in Photography you will have access to our well-resourced Art facilities at our WISE Campus where the Bristol School of Art is based. The Art department organise trips to Art galleries and also live projects with external bodies. Previous examples of this has been working with Filton Community Gardens to create public art. You can also join our range of academies to further the skills you have developed in the subject. For example, you could join our Social Academy which organises cultural celebrations throughout the year, or our Craft Academy which designs and makes items to sell the charity throughout the year. English Language is the study of language in the world around us. You will learn to analyse how language is structured on a word, clause, and sentence basis and how it is tailored for different purposes including advertisements, social media, and journalism. It equips you with the skills needed to recognise how we are influenced by the opinions of those with different motivations. It also explores how we develop language from an early age and the social and biological factors that influence this and how the language develops over time. English Language is taught from the AQA board. You will sit a full A Level exam at the end of the second year. There are two examination papers, as well as a Non-Examined Assessment (coursework) that you will complete in the second year this includes a piece of original writing and an investigation. Year 2 In the second year, two further units are taught, plus you will also complete a Non-Examined Assessment (coursework) unit. 3. ‘Language Change’: Here you will study the developments of the English language. You will look at a wide range of historical and contemporary texts and focus on what led to the change of language, whilst considering reaction to these changes. 4. ‘Child Language Acquistion’: In this unit you will explore children development of written and spoken language. You will consider the functions of child language use, key stages of progression of language production and different theories related to child language development. 5. ‘Language in Action’: This unit is the Non-Examined Assessment (coursework) unit which is worth 20% of the overall grade. You will produce a language investigation on an area of interest. This could range from representations of certain social groups in the media to the way masculinity is represented by film characters. The second part of the Non-Examined Assessment requires you to create a piece of original writing and a supplementary commentary to justify your writing choices. Progression Routes English Language is one of the most transferable A Levels and can be combined with any subject. Popular subject combinations with this subject include Sociology, Law, Film, Media Studies, and Psychology. You can go on to study degrees in English Language, Linguistics, Law, Sociology and Education. Learners who study English Language might be interested in a career in journalism, marketing and sales, education, paediatrics (if combined with the sciences) or any career where writing is important. Additional Learning Opportunities There is a wide range of opportunities to further develop your learning. You can join our English Academy which explores contemporary texts to widen your cultural awareness and further develop your skills in writing and analysis. We also offer a Creative Writing Academy and there is an opportunity to take part in national creative writing competitions. The English Department also offer exciting trips to journalism workshops and have offered an accent workshop in the British Library. These range from Subject Academies to supercharge your learning, Skills Academies to learn something new like a language or how to drive a car, to our prestigious Sports Academies. Our Academies enrichment programme has been carefully designs to provide you with a wide range of chances to develop your skills and experiences. Mark A Jones Assistant Principal - Academic Aspire Academy High Flyers Programme Learners joining us with high GCSE grades (8s and 9s) across most or all subjects. If you join us with high GCSE grades you will have the opportunity to join our High Flyers Programme. Alongside your academy choices, you will be invited to regular information and support sessions to help prepare you for applying to top universities, competitive courses or leading apprenticeships. This includes bespoke support for applying to Oxford, Cambridge or Russell group universities and Medicine, Dentistry and veterinary science courses. The high flyers programme will help you with all aspects of an application, helping to de-mystify the application process and clarify what these providers are looking for. Activities include: A specific talk on New Parents Information Evening for Parents and Carers, detailed guidance with the application process, support with admissions tests and interviews (including practice interviews), a trip to Oxford University, guest speakers and opportunities to participate in national competitions in a variety of subjects including Oxford and Cambridge essay prizes. Learners in the High Flyers Programme should also undertake an academy that either fits the subject they wish to study at university, the Extended Project Qualification or the Critical Thinking Academy to further develop the skills to stand out. Aspire Academy Duke of Edinburgh's Award Open to all learners The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is one of the most well-known and widely respected awards for young people in the United Kingdom. Covering five different areas: Volunteering, Skill, Physical, Expedition and Residential; participants show their dedication and build their confidence and skills set to help them stand-out beyond their academic abilities. We offer the Gold Award in the Sixth Form which requires a commitment of 18 months, or 12 if the Silver Award has already been achieved. N.B. There is a enrolment fee to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award as well as additional costs for the Expedition and Residential sections. . Aspire Academy Critical Thinking Open to all learners thinking of applying to top universities. Welcome to the Critical Thinking academy! Aspire Academy Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Open to learners who want to gain an additional qualification. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a challenging yet rewarding qualification that helps you develop your research skills. The EPQ helps prepare you for University by developing your independent study skills. You will be responsible for setting your own research question, then through research you will be supported to write a report or create an artefact. You will need to express an interest in the EPQ on enrolment and will be able to submit your final project in the October of your second year. Alternatively, learners can opt to undertake the EPQ in their second year. . Aspire Academy Fourth subjects There are opportunities to undertake a fourth subject whilst you study with us in the Sixth Form. If you are taking a fourth subject, such as Core Maths or Further Maths, or are in the Sports Academy, there is not a need to also choose a Sixth Form Academy as you will have a significant time commitment from these activities. In certain circumstances, if you are joining us with high GCSE grades of 8s or 9s, we may allow you to undertake another subject as a fourth subject. This will depend on if it works on your timetable and if you can be entered for the AS exam in this subject. This can be discussed on enrolment or if you have any questions you can email sixth@sgscol.ac.uk Subject Academy Biology Academy This academy is open to those studying Biology A Level In the Biology Academy you will have the opportunity to deepen and develop your knowledge in the subject. This will not only underpin your learning on the A Level, but also help you stand-out as an ideal candidate as a biologist for universities. Those in the academy have the opportunity to undertake the British Biology Olympiad as well as undertake some additional practical experiments and learning. You will also be able to develop your skills as a biologist. You will learn the type of research-based and problem solving skills that you will encounter at university to become more well-rounded in your understanding of the subject. Subject Academy Business Academy Open to learners studying Business or Economics Are you studying Business or Economics and want to put your skills to the test? In the Business Academy learners start their own company and register it with companies house. They are given a cash injection by the sixth form to design, develop, market and sell a product. Learners in the Business Academy are given specific roles within their company, each fulfilling a different role like in any business organisation. Everything you study in the classroom can be applied and developed in this academy which is run by external advisors from the world of Business who share their expertise with you. Subject Academy English Academy Open to those learners studying English Language and Literature The English Academy will broaden your understanding of the world around you as we discuss a variety of texts from across the globe. You will explore key contemporary concepts through the medium of personal essays, short stories, speeches and more. You will also have the opportunity to enter a range of essay competitions as we level up your academic writing skills. This academy is especially useful those those interested in careers in journalism, teaching or marketing and for those studying English Language. . Subject Academy History Academy Open to all learners The History Academy will essentially equip you with the skills to ask 'What is History and why do we study it?' You'll develop your research skills, use source work and explore how fields of history affects perspective. There will also be an opportunity to consider the history around us, and to explore how history is presented in the public space. It will also introduce ideas such as heritage, collective memory and national memory. There'll be a chance to consider controversial histories, such as the Colston statue and you'll use documentary and film media to enhance your understanding of the taught curriculum. Subject Academy Legal Academy Open to learners studying Law and Criminology In this academy you will dissect and analyse a new legal case study each week - with a focus on miscarriages of justice, American and British crime. The academy is discussion based and you will need to consider the evidence and be prepared to get involved with each case. You will also dive into and investigate a series of cold cases; reviewing the evidence and exploring new lines of enquiries. In addition to this, the legal academy also has talks from a wide variety of different speakers. Such as university lecturers from our university partners, police officers and legal professionals. . Subject Academy Maths Academy Maths Academy is a weekly session with a purpose to provide extra help and support with any maths you have covered in any subject, whether that’s maths, or science, or psychology and beyond. As your exams draw closer it will also be a great chance to attempt past papers and get help with revision and exam techniques from a subject specialist. For both those who either love maths and can’t get enough, or those who loathe it and need some more support! Help and support is provided by both teaching and Sixth Form staff as well as second year maths students working to offer mentoring help and support to first years. Skills Academy First Aid Academy Open to all learners The First Aid Academy offers you the chance to learn how to save a life! Skills Academy Horticultural Academy Open to all learners This academy gives you an introduction to plantsmanship; the knowledge of plants alongside the skill and expertise in planting. The horticulture academy has its own Polytunnel where plants are propagated ready to be planted around the Sixth Form site. Summary Are you considering choosing an A level that contains a mathematical element; such as Business, Psychology, Economics, Geography or a Science but don't want to do a full A Level in Maths? Are you wanting to continue your development in maths beyond GCSE? Would you like to know how to apply maths to budgeting and personal finance? If the answer to any of the above is ‘yes’, then Core Maths is the subject for you! Core Maths is a one-year subject taken as a fourth option alongside your other A Level choices. It is an opportunity for you to continue to develop and hone your mathematical skills which are especially important in a range of subjects that require good levels of mathematical skill. Core Maths carries the same amount of UCAS points as an AS qualification (up to 20 UCAS points) and is taught on the AQA specification. You will sit two papers at the end of the year, both 1 hour and 30 minutes long and worth 60 marks. You will sit Paper 1 and Paper 2A - Statistical Techniques and can take a scientific calculator into both exams. Entry Requirements Core Maths is studied as a fourth subject offer. A grade 5 in GCSE Maths is required to study the subject in addition to the entry criteria required for your other subjects. Course Content AQA core maths is studied over 1 year and consists of two units. Unit 1 is focused on the application of statistical techniques, interpreting data and drawing conclusions in the solution of problems. This involves estimation, collection of data and analysis of data, and maths for personal finance (e.g. taxation savings, loans and mortgages). Unit 2 involves working with critical analysis of data and models (including spreadsheets and tabular data), normal distribution of data (e.g. peoples heights, errors in measures etc), you will also work with probabilities and estimations and correlation and regression analysis of graphs. Progression Routes Studying Core Maths will equip you with a range of skills to make you more attractive to universities and employers and also aid you in your subject choices at A Level. You will develop key skills such as problem solving, data and budget management, and data modelling which are extremely important life and employability skills. Additional Learning Opportunities If you study Mathematics, you can benefit from our maths mentor programme where our dedicated maths mentors help to support and guide newer learners in the Sixth Form. The maths department also run a drop-in maths clinic twice a week for you to obtain bespoke support and guidance with your mathematical problems. You could take part in one of the problem-solving courses at Bath/Bristol University or engage with university academics and employers in our STEM@Lunch and SGS Sixth Talks series. Aspire Academy Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Open to learners in their second year of study who want to gain an additional qualification. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a challenging yet rewarding qualification that helps you develop your research skills. The EPQ helps prepare you for University by developing your independent study skills. You will be responsible for setting your own research question, then through research you will be supported to write a report or create an artefact. You will need to express your interest in undertaking the EPQ towards the end of the first year and complete the preparatory work over the summer period before enrolment in the second year of your studies. Subject Academy Business Academy Open to learners studying Business or Economics Are you studying Business or Economics and want to put your skills to the test? In the Business Academy learners start their own company and register it with companies house. They are given a cash injection by the sixth form to design, develop, market and sell a product. Learners in the Business Academy are given specific roles within their company, each fulfilling a different role like in any business organisation. Everything you study in the classroom can be applied and developed in this academy which is run by external advisors from the world of Business who share their expertise with you. It is a fantastic opportunity to put your learning into practice. Previous years have seen the Business Academy make enough profit to donate over 100 trees to reforestation efforts with the profits made. Subject Academy English Academy Open to those learners studying English Language and Literature The English Academy will broaden your understanding of the world around you as we discuss a variety of texts from across the globe. You will explore key contemporary concepts through the medium of personal essays, short stories, speeches and more. You will also have the opportunity to enter a range of essay competitions as we level up your academic writing skills. This academy is especially useful those those interested in careers in journalism, teaching or marketing and for those studying English Language Subject Academy History Academy Open to all learners The History Academy will essentially equip you with the skills to ask 'What is History and why do we study it?' You'll develop your research skills, use source work and explore how fields of history affects perspective. There will also be an opportunity to consider the history around us, and to explore how history is presented in the public space. It will also introduce ideas such as heritage, collective memory and national memory. There'll be a chance to consider controversial histories, such as the Colston statue and you'll use documentary and film media to enhance your understanding of the taught curriculum. There is also a range of speakers who come in to speak to you about different aspects of history, in the pas this has included speakers from the SS Great Britain. Subject Academy Legal Academy Open to students studying Law, Criminology and Forensic Science. In this academy you will dissect and analyse a new legal case study each week - with a focus on miscarriages of justice, American and British crime. The academy is discussion based and you will need to consider the evidence and be prepared to get involved with each case. You will also dive into and investigate a series of cold cases; reviewing the evidence and exploring new lines of enquiries. In addition to this, the legal academy also has talks from a wide variety of different speakers. Such as university lecturers from our university partners, police officers and legal professionals. Subject Academy Maths Academy Maths Academy is a weekly session with a purpose to provide extra help and support with any maths you have covered in any subject, whether that’s maths, or science, or psychology and beyond. As your exams draw closer it will also be a great chance to attempt past papers and get help with revision and exam techniques from a subject specialist. For both those who either love maths and can’t get enough, or those who loathe it and need some more support! Help and support is provided by both teaching and Sixth Form staff as well as second year maths students working to offer help and support to first years. Subject Academy Media Academy This academy is open to any learner. In this academy, you will learn and develop skills around media including discussing the landscape of the media today, current news stories and the different slants different media outlets have on them and developments and trends in social media. In addition you will develop skills in products, such as Adobe Photoshop, which are useful for a wide-range of careers in media and publishing and extremely useful for those studying Media as these are needed for the NEA element of that course. Subject Academy Psychology Academy Open to those learners studying Psychology. This academy gives you the opportunity to explore different aspects of Psychology beyond the classroom. From analysing the showmanship of Derren Brown in his Channel 4 documentaries to learning about careers in Psychology and additional research studies. You will look at areas of psychology such as: forensic, health, clinical, educational, research, occupational, counselling, neuro and sports psychology. You will also have a chance to make links between these areas and the psychological research that underpins them, so they have a better understanding of how psychology is used in the real world. Subject Academy Sociology Academy Open to Sociology students Take the sociological concepts you explore in class and apply it to the world around you and contemporary issues. This academy will develop your understanding and interest in global contemporary social issues, along with your analytical and evaluative skills which are an important factor in your success in the subject. The Sociology Academy is delivered in a series of workshops and guest lectures. Skills Academy BSL Academy Did you know that there are over 151,000 users of British Sign Language (BSL) in the UK? This academy gives you an introduction to the basics of BSL and will give you the skills to hold basic conversations with members of the deaf community, their relatives and interpreters. This is a useful skill to have in any customer facing role or even just to learn for fun! Over the twelve weeks the academy runs, you will be able to learn how to greet deaf people, learn the alphabet and numbers, say basic phrases and more! Skills Academy Careers Academy The Careers Academy is guaranteed to give you some amazing tools to help you navigate your future. In twelve sessions you will create an outstanding CV, build your digital profile, learn about the changing jobs market, understand how to ace interviews, search out the best Post-18 courses for your individual needs, discover entrepreneurship, and lots more. Skills Academy Chinese Academy This academy is designed to help you learn basic Chinese language skills such as greeting, introducing self, currency and counting, food and drink and shopping. There are also some opportunities to experience Chinese culture through events, activities and celebrations throughout the year. Skills Academy Debating Academy The ability to communicate effectively and back-up an argument with well-selected evidence is a key skill that universities and employers look for. The Debating Academy holds weekly debates on a range of issues. Sometimes you may be arguing for something you believe in, however learning to argue for something you don't believe in is a more difficult, yet rewarding task. Membership of the academy brings with it the opportunity to enter local, and national, debating competitions which further help make members of the academy stand out as candidates. Skills Academy Digi-Ed Academy The SGS DigiED academy is for any student who seeks to develop their digital skills. Advancing your digital skills will open doors for your career, and support your studies. At SGS college we have a range of Microsoft experts, and we would like to help you assess and develop your digital skills too. Skills Academy Driving Academy The Driving Academy is designed to equip you with the skills you need to pass your driving theory test, along with the opportunity to have a driving lesson too. You will discover the rules of the road, how insurance works and how to fix common problems with a car, alongside crucial practice and guidance for your test. Skills Academy Italian Academy Want to learn some basic Italian? Thinking of going on a holiday to Italy? Want to learn a useful additional skill? If so, then the Italian Academy is for you! The ability to speak languages is a really useful skill and something that looks really good on a CV or UCAS statement. Over the twelve week length of the academy, you will learn some basic phrases in Italian to be able to hold basic conversations, order food and will serve as the launch pad for future exploration of the language. Skills Academy Horticultural Academy This academy gives you an introduction to plantsmanship; the knowledge of plants alongside the skill and expertise in planting. This year-long project will bring a community of like-minded and budding green fingered enthusiasts to plan, design and create wildlife spaces around our campus making it buzz and burst into life. The horticulture academy has its own Polytunnel where plants are propagated ready to be planted around the Sixth Form site. Skills Academy LGBTQ+ Academy This academy runs on Friday lunch times and is open to all learners. The LGBTQ+ Academy runs for our learners to meet and discuss in a safe space. The LGBTQ+ organises several talks and events throughout the year, with a focus on celebrating LGBT History month and Pride. Skills Academy Marketing and Short Films Academy The marketing academy is for those interested in knowing more about marketing and how to create advertisements. The academy will work on a series of short films about the Sixth Form to put onto our website working on creating impactful, well filmed, case studies about learners experiences in the Sixth Form. This is ideal for those interested in film, journalism and marketing careers and helps to create a visible portfolio of videos that can aid in applications onto these types of courses, or, of course, just for fun. Skills Academy Music Academy Do you play a musical instrument? Are you interested in having the opportunity to play with others?
